Maria Darmaningsih, The First COVID-19 Patient in Indonesia


Maria Darmaningsih (born in Jakarta, March 24, 1956; age 63 years) was an Indonesian artist. Her name was knew through her works in the form of dance choreography which was staged on various stage performances, both domestically and abroad. Maria Darmaningsih was an academic at the Jakarta Art Institute.

In March 2, 2020, she was appointed as the first COVID-19 patient in Indonesia. Maria was immediately isolated in the isolation room of RSPI Sulianti Saroso. Maria was in isolation room with her two daughters who were also tested positive for COVID-19. She said, during the isolation period of the first week, almost every day she was cried. She could not stand the public gossip and the preaching of her who linked the infection related to her profession as a dancer. In fact, her profession as a dancer actually contributes to bringing the nation's fragrant name in the international arena in the arts and culture.

After being recovered on 16 March 2020, Maria attended her press conference with the Minister of Health. She advised that people do not need to panic over the Corona virus outbreak, but must remain vigilant because Corona does not know age, race and religion. Maria also appealed to the public and the media to support patients in the hospital, morally supportive. Because of the inaccurate dissemination of information by various irresponsible parties, it is very disturbing to their psychic.
